Technology Legislation

Sustainable technology only scales when the law makes room for it. We track, explain and comment on the legislation that shapes how technology is built, used and retired in India, and work with the FIRSTIP Legislation Committee on model provisions for adoption by Government.

Laws we follow

  • Information Technology Act, 2000 and its intermediary rules
  • Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023
  • Telecommunications Act, 2023
  • Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022
  • Energy Conservation Act, 2001 (as amended in 2022)
  • Biological Diversity Act, 2002

What we do

  • Plain-language explainers on new bills and rules
  • Submissions to public consultations
  • Round tables with lawmakers, regulators, industry and innovators
  • Gap analyses of existing law for green and emerging technologies
